If you notice a loss of connectivity between Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Express and your camcorder or deck after upgrading your versions of Mac OS X and QuickTime, here’s what you can do to resolve the issue.
- Remove QuickTime receipts:
- Go to /Library/Receipts/
- Locate the QuickTime receipts files.
- Select all QuickTime receipts that have version numbers as part of their names (but don’t select the other QuickTime receipts). Here’s an example of what they look like (you may have different receipts on your computer):

- Drag the selected receipts to the Trash.
- Download and install the latest version of QuickTime

Final Cut (and other editing apps) will accept many kinds and formats of audio for import into the Browser or Timeline.
However, just because they will, doesn’t mean you should!
If you import compressed audio, for example, in MP3 or AAC codecs, or audio in a different bit or sample rate than your Timeline (such as 44.1 KHz, 32 KHz or 12-bit), you will often hear clicks, pops, and audio dropouts while editing, which is distracting for your creative process, and in many cases your audio will require rendering before you can even hear it, which sounds like “beep-beep-beep-beep” and wastes …
Here’s a quick tip (under 40 seconds) for instantly adding a soft glow to titles in Final Cut Pro or Express - without going into LiveType or Motion.

If your projects are going to be delivered on DVD or broadcast, it’s important to have an accurate studio monitor on your desk so you can see your project as your viewers will see it while you’re editing.
Why?
First, many editing programs show you a low quality “proxy” of your timeline, so you can’t judge color correction, brightness, saturation, contrast, how titles or graphics will look, or any other aspect of the picture accurately.
Can I just enable a second computer monitor to show video and that will work?
With some editing programs, you can enable a second monitor to show a …

Watch the movie below for the probable solution.
When you trim a clip, there is (usually) “extra” media before and after the part of the clip you want in your timeline. (That’s what trimming does, allows you to select a portion of a clip that will show in your movie)
COOL TIP: If you select the Slip tool by pressing “S”, and click on a clip in the timeline, you’ll see a brown outline showing you the extra media on either side of your “trimmed” clip.
Another way to see what handles are on your clip is by double clicking it, then noticing …

I have shot multicam concerts locking up timecode by beaming wireless audio SMPTE timecode to all cameras and recording it on Ch 2, but I can tell you it was a big hassle and a waste of time.
My recommendation for multi-camera shoots is to either:
1. Use TOD (Free Run) Timecode
TOD (Time of Day) timecode is a switchable option on some recent camcorders. With this option, you can synchronize multiple cameras, then each camera can start or stop at will, and the timecode always reflects the current time, not the tape position, so the …
Video editing systems will have problems. The process of pinpointing the problem is called “troubleshooting”.
Troubleshooting is the art of changing one thing at a time until the problem is pinpointed.
For example, you’re having a problem with a project. Try creating a brand new project. Does the problem persist? If the brand new project works fine, that pinpoints your existing project. Perhaps you should delete the render files, restore from the AutoSave Vault, or paste your clips into a new project. If the new project has the same symptoms, that points to a system problem.
If you are getting a General …
Here are some potential problems that you may encounter while capturing, and some possible solutions.
If you have a problem not mentioned here, the best way to solve it is to “troubleshoot” the problem. Troubleshooting is a process where you change variables, usually one at a time, to pinpoint the problem. Here’s a helpful article on troubleshooting.
Tape Capture Problems and Possible Solutions
• Problems with your capturing device:
If you are having trouble capturing footage, whether it a “dropped frames” or “broken timecode” warning, try using the same device that you shot the footage with, instead of your deck …
It seems more and more common that editors are being asked to use content from a DVD- perhaps the client has provided you with last years annual report DVD… and wants you to redit it. (Remember, ripping off copyrighted content is a Federal offense with imprisonment and large fines possible!)
You can use MacTheRipper or OSEx to get the content from a DVD on your hard drive (OS X only)

If you shot and edited a project in DV format, this is one recommendation:
- Check your edit to make sure luma (brightness) and chroma (color saturation) levels are within broadcast-legal ranges. Adjust if necessary.
- Check your project for audio clipping, and adjust levels if needed.
- Make sure you’re completely out a second before the time limit- that is, for a :30, all music tails and fades should be complete by :29, or you run the risk off getting cut off by the slop factor in broadcast sequencers.
