Hi Josh and other friends,
I have a 2 hour wedding shot in HD and edited on FCPX. But the DVD quality is poor with visible lines and jagged edges. In the past when I edited with FCP7, I used Josh’s excellent process for getting the best DVDs. But I don’t see I have the same options with FCPX. What should I do to get the best quality? Thanks! Duncan

Final Cut Pro 7 and before: 1 year, 9 months agoDear Josh,
Thanks so much for your quick reply.
The movie is HD. It is 97 minutes, and I don’t think it is interlaced as I checked “de-interlace” in the Method 3 process to make sure.
Yes, I can drag it into Compressor and use the 120 minute preset. I just did that and was able to complete the project. But two questions still hang in the air…[Read more]

The AC3 audio file will sound pretty much just as good as AIFF. Not sure why DVDSP wouldn’t work to compress.
Was your original footage interlaced? If so, depending on the content, you may want to leave it interlaced. More info:

Final Cut Pro 7 and before: 1 year, 9 months agoHelp, please. I used Josh’s Method #3 to burn a Quicktime .mov file to take into DVD Studio Pro. The resulting file is 112 GBs. I took it into DVDSP where the Disc Meter shows the size to be 6.2GB. I went into Preferences to lower the bit rate, but it had no effect on the size. It is still 6.2GB. Is there a place to adjust the setting to fit the…[Read more]

Final Cut Pro: 2 years, 3 months agoHi Josh and Strypes. Pardon the delay in responding. Someone said once, “Life is what happens to you when you’re making plans.” First of all, my apologies for my question about maxing out the size of the DVD. I learned from Larry Jordan that Compression doesn’t work that way. He said, Your goal is not [...]

Final Cut Pro: 2 years, 3 months agoHi Mark, Thanks so much for your interesting new (to me) approach to making DVDs. I have printed it and will keep it handy to try the next time I am set to make a DVD. It sounds promising! Part of my delay in getting back to you (besides life stuff) has been that I [...]

Final Cut Pro: 2 years, 3 months agoMark, thanks for the suggestion. I have been to preferences > encoder and played around with it, but I still can’t get the quality up. I’m trying to use Josh’s Method #2 and Method #3 which doesn’t use Compressor. Those Methods go directly to DVDSP. I’m frustrated because I burned a DVD via Compressor using [...]

Final Cut Pro: 2 years, 3 months agoJosh, How do you max out the capacity of a 4.7 Gig DVD using DVD Studio Pro 4? So far the approaches I’ve taken only use about 3GBs, and the quality is not good. As you recommended, I‘ve used both your Method #2 and Method #3 to take my 47 minutes of FCP 7 edited [...]

Final Cut Pro: 2 years, 3 months agoHi Josh. Sorry to hear about your cold. Take care of yourself as there is a fair amount of sickness going around that hangs on for a long time. Yes, my sequence settings are that way because FCP asked if it should adjust them, and I said yes. A small question. When I wrote this [...]

Final Cut Pro: 2 years, 3 months agoJosh, I have not heard back from anyone after you asked the question above. As you suggested, I took my 47 min of AVCHD footage and processed it using Method #2 and then ran it through Compressor and then DVDSP. I must have chosen the wrong settings because my output DVD only plays in my [...]

Final Cut Pro: 2 years, 3 months agoSmiley, I ran the test you prescribed. The lines are gone! However, the image quality overall is softer and not as clear as it was before running the file through Compressor. You’ve solved the basic problem. Can you now give this program the best possible clarity? Thanks for staying on this case.

Final Cut Pro: 2 years, 3 months agoHi Smiley, You’re a lifeline! Thanks for your offer of help. I read through the article and posts on the link you sent. Final Cut Pro: 2 years, 3 months agoHi Josh and friends. I have a DVD authoring question. I shot AVCHD hi def footage and edited it in Final Cut Pro. The final file size was close to 50 Gigs. I’ve used Log and Transfer to import clips, but never to export them. After reading your note, I went into Log and Transfer and tried to load a clip and look for a way to export it. But I keep being asked if I want to ”re-import” the test clip because I already have it in the Browser. Ideas?

Hi Duncan, if you have the clips in Pro Res on your hard drive, you can easily drag them from your drive to your external hard drive. There’s no need to ”export”– unless your friend needs another format. Do they?
To quickly find the clips, just right click on any clip in your Browser and choose ”Show in Finder” from the menu.

Have you already captured the clips off the camera onto your computer using final cut? I’m a bit confused on what you mean by importing into fcp through iMovie, so if you could clarify I can probably help you out.
If you already have the raw clips, I would recommend doing an internet based file-transfer using http://www.dropbox.com. You can transfer…[Read more]

You can try to transfer AVCHD footage to your scratch disk (or your Toshiba mobile hard drive) using the Log and Transfer window in Final Cut Pro.
* AVCHD support is available only on Intel-based Macintosh computers.
* AVCHD camcorders typically connect to computers via USB 2.0, not FireWire.
* DVD-based AVCHD camcorders are not…[Read more]-

so once you used ”Log and Transfer” you should have usable clips on your scratch drive, right?
You could then just drag those new files on to your mobile drive, and send it off.

Duncan, if you simply want to copy the raw footage off the card(s) in order to send it to someone else, there’s no need to go through the Log and Capture and conversion process. The editor can do that when they receive the files.
What I would do is make a folder on the Toshiba hard drive for each card (Card1, Card2, etc), then simply copy the…[Read more]

Yes lots of cameras use removable SD or Sony Memory Stick cards.
If you copied all the files and the folder structure off the camera’s hard drive on to the Toshiba then that should be fine.
