We managed to get our hands on the hot new Canon 5D Mark II camera and put it through the paces. This is an extraordinary hybrid DSLR. The 1920×1080 HD movies produced by this camera are jaw dropping. While the lack of manual controls in movie mode and the poor audio quality leave a lot to be desired, the visual clarity and film-like depth of field are sheer awe inspiring. I haven’t been this excited about a still camera since the early 90’s when I got my plastic …

We want to give you the opportunity to explore the art of keying. Taking the background out and dropping in something different is a special effects technique that has been around for years. However it was not until recently that we have been able to get broadcast quality results in both a fast and inexpensive manner. Quality Chroma keying is now for everyone.
Possibilities
Think about being able to shoot a background plate in Hawaii to use in the middle of a New York …
In this movie, do-it-yourself handyman Eric Schultheis shows a method of making a professional quality backdrop for video or photography very inexpensively, and tips for mounting it in a basement or garage.

Canon announced several new camcorders at CES, including the HV30.
You know how excited we are about the HV20. It’s the best imaging for under $1000 ever in the history of the human race. The HV30 is the same, except adds a couple things, a better flipout screen, 30p, support for a larger battery, and it’s black, so it looks a little more professional.
More info on Canon’s site, also see the HV20 post.

The Steadicam Merlin Arm and Vest make extended shooting nearly effortless. Even with heavy cameras – up to seven pounds (3.2kg) with the optional Metal Gimbal – the Merlin can now fly for hours without undue fatigue, and preserve all the flexibility and reach of the operator’s own arms.

When you’re EDITING, you can make good decisions just watching the Canvas Window on your laptop.
But for color grading, it’s critically important to watch your show on a monitor that’s displaying an accurate image. Monitoring is important because all your color grading work is going to be off if the monitor you’re watching while you work is not telling the truth.
Think of all the ways viewers might watch your project. If you’re delivering on DVD, your show might be watched on plasma or LCD TVs, projectors, or older CRT TVs - but they also might be watching the DVD on …
You’re shooting with your new HDV or HD camcorder, and the footage looks amazing! But are you really seeing the full picture?
Not unless you’re looking at a high definition monitor. But professional HD monitors are still expensive.
So, here’s an idea:
You can buy a LCD TV/computer monitor (the lines are being blurred more every day) that can be used for three different purposes:
1. While shooting, you can run component (like from the Canon XL H1 or XH A1) out of your camera into component input on the LCD to monitor what you’re shooting in full, pixel-for-pixel …

The Fig Rig Stabilizer from Bogen/Manfrotto is non-traditional in design, yet simple and effective. It’s a modular system that smoothly supports the DV camera and acts as a frame to mount all the accessories.
A circular frame with a crossbar to mount most mini DV cameras, allows the Fig Rig to become part of the body to produce smooth, steady traveling shots. As the operator walks, his/her muscles and tendons absorb all the shocks, transferring only fluid movements to the camera. As there are no straps or harnesses attached to the Fig Rig, quick …
If your projects are going to be delivered on DVD or broadcast, it’s important to have an accurate studio monitor on your desk so you can see your project as your viewers will see it while you’re editing.
Why?
First, many editing programs show you a low quality “proxy” of your timeline, so you can’t judge color correction, brightness, saturation, contrast, how titles or graphics will look, or any other aspect of the picture accurately.
Can I just enable a second computer monitor to show video and that will work?
With some editing programs, you can enable a second monitor to show a …
