I have a hardware question. I want to add a monitor to my macbook pro. I could get the Apple LED Cinema Display 27″ display or I could get the Sony 40″ LED HDTV. Both would be great, but does one have advantages over the other? Sony = http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&partNumber=NSX40GT1 I spent about 20 hours a week editing video.

I would not buy either of those, assuming you want the monitor to run your editing software on, as opposed to just being a playback device.

The Apple LED is a consumer monitor – too bright for accuracy and also it has a glossy surface that picks up reflections from the room. It can be colour-profiled but it’s hard to get it really accurate.

The Sony TV is too big to use as a monitor – you would have to have it halfway across the room to get a comfortable viewing distance, and again it’s not designed for computer use so would be hard to adjust to get an accurate picture.

I would suggest looking at specialist graphics monitors from Eizo or NEC – something like the NEC PA271 would be an ideal choice. Pair it with a hardware display calibrator such as the X-Rite iOne (or buy NEC’s Spectraview version of the PA271 which comes bundled with a calibrator) and you will have a really accurate display ideal for editing both photos and video.

Make sure you send the right signal to the monitor, and not the one from the mini display port. You need an AJA IO or a Matrox MXO 2 on top of the monitor.

Perfect Answers. NEC monitor is on the way.

    Josh,

    Help!

I just bought a brand new macbook pro 2.2 17″. It will not install my Final Cut Pro Studio 2. HELP! I talked to Apple and told them I was simply going to return the computer, which i will because this forced software upgrade in not part of the program. It was never an issue with Apple, Steve Jobs will be even more sorely missed than ever. Do you have any suggestion to over ride what appears to be a lack of something called Rosetta compatibility? Or do I just keep buy older Mac that will run my “vintage” 2 year old software?

Is there any way to upgrade? I have FCS3 on a new MBP and it runs great.

Apple came out with Rosetta as a bridge between PowerPC macs and the Intel processor macs. Lion does not support Rosetta, so any apps you use that require Rosetta will not run on Lion. To check what apps you have that will not run on Lion, click on get info, and if it reads “Kind: Application (PowerPC)” it will not run. If it reads “Kind: Application (Universal)” It will run under Lion.
