Down-conversion of HD to SD without jagged/wrinkled edges (10 posts)

    Hi, all,

I’m desperately trying to down-convert beautiful QT files (1080/ 30p) HD footage (from canon XF300) to standard def so that it looks good in its final outcome in DVD STUDIO PRO.

BUT! While the colors are still very good (better than SD-to-SD), some of the lines are somewhat jagged and wrinkled after being downconverted to SD via Compressor (and even when I tried doing it Josh’s recipe with PNG files).

Is there a tried and true method of going from HD to SD for DVD STUDIO PRO in a way that the SD video looks as good as it should if it had been SD in the first place?

Is the format of your timeline 1080/30? It sounds like you may have interlacing turned on.

Yes – 1080p originally. Would the answer be, then, tweaking things in FRAME CONTROLS in compressor?

I use a Canon XL H1 and in the menu you can down convert right from the camera when loading into the computer. Check your manual maybe it has the same feature?

It’s the new Canon XF300 — I’m afraid it’s just the various HD codecs.
However, I think I’ve found the solution: enabling FRAME CONTROLS in the compressor mix-down and tweaking things there.
The result is an SD picture that looks better than native SD (ex: XL2).

Let me know if there are other thoughts/ other ways to improve!

Is your editing timeline also 1080p?

    Hi, Josh,
Ya, sorry – it is the (practically) native 1080p/ straight from the camera timeline

I am also having a similar problem.I shoot hd on a sony fx1,import into fcp6 as DV/DVCPRO NTSC.By the time i get it to compressor,i have problems finding a quality setting. Many times it either looks a bit jaggy edged and the camera flashes emphasize interlaced. My projects are typically 90 min weddings that are authored as Sd dvd’s.Can anyone help me set up the correct workflow.I hear a lot about pro res being the way to go but seems to make large files.Im sure im doing something wrong

In my case, I have found since found (since the first time of posting) that enabling FRAME CONTROLS and tweaking them in the compressor recipe is the way to go. That takes away the jagged look and interlacing problems.

Timothy Bakland – I’m right in the middle of this same problem of getting jaggies in DVD Studio Pro. Could you please provide the specific settings in Compressor Frame Controls you used to take care of this problem. Desperate with a deadline today. johnsonvideo@hotmail.com

    Thanks
    Leon
