okay I just got a new iMac and I’m thinking about purchasing FCPX. I’ve been tooling around with the demo and it seems okay, but I’d like to hear from some people who have edited a few projects already using this software. While I’m disappointed at some of the lack of control over certain properties of effects, lack of multi cam, etc etc..I am more interested in the overall stability of the program, does it export files properly…IOW, does it actually work. I’ve already had the trial version crash on me once during a rather light-weight edit, which makes me worry that it may have too much going on in the background to support all the real time rendering…
    …thoughts?

Your choices at this point are:

    FCP7
Great software, great interface, solid, need to transcode all incoming footage, discontinued.

    FCPX
Powerful foundation, will edit H264/AVC HDSLR footage in real time, very buggy, clunky user interface.

    Premiere
Interface not as good as FCP7, better than FCPX, if you have the right graphic card it’s more powerful then FCP7.

    Avid MC
Expensive, limited, reports are that it works well, though I haven’t heard any reports from iMac.

I’m actually beginning to get used to the logic of the interface, but when you say “VERY BUGGY”, what do you mean by that?

That’s my big question, does the most recent version of FCPX actually work?

It works if you avoid the bugs. Many people have reported finishing projects without trouble. Many others are in “wait and see” mode, to see what happens over the next few updates.

It’s kind of like the question, “Can you run across a minefield without getting blown up?” The answer is yes, if you take all the right steps and avoid the wrong ones!

I have a different day job…so I think I’m gonna take a stab at the minefield and maybe get premiere elements as a back up as well…
