If your audio sample rate matches, then the loss of sync is a mystery… maybe you should try transcoding to Pro Res and see if that fixes it?

mini-dv SD 720 x 480 DV anamorphic …the preferences in the import settings on fcpx are pretty bare bones, I have all the stuff (like copy files to final cut event folder, optimize media,etc) unchecked

What format are you capturing, and what are your capture settings?

I would just deselect that option.

There is no advantage to selecting it.
