I just got a new iMac, but it only has one HD. In the past I have always kept my captured footage on a separate drive than the main (boot) hard drive (can’t remember why, just seems like the thing you’re supposed to do).

Anywho, it looks like I’ll be running FCPX, and was wondering if the necessity of putting your media on a separate drive is still important with current technology…if it is, could I create a partition to remedy that problem?

There’s no need to partition or keep media on a separate drive. Millions are editing using only one hard dive.

Though you could buy an external drive if you ever run out of room or want to free up space on your internal drive to copy footage over.

    Thanks Josh!
(just seemed to remember something in the past about how this could fragment your drive or something)
