What kind of camera are you using or do you like to use?

  • Profile picture of Josh Mellicker Josh Mellicker said 1 year, 10 months ago ago:

I usually shoot an a Canon XH-A1, but just got the T2i with a JuicedLink adapter and will be using that from now on for almost everything.

For underwater video I have an HF20 with the WP-V1:

I use the Panasonic DVX 100B
If I need HD I’ll rent one.
Also have a consumer Sony SR12 – works well for on line video.

I use the Panasonic GH1, G2 (Micro Four Thirds dSLRs) and Sony HVR-A1 (HDV camcorder).

The small size and light weight of the Panasonics is really helpful, and I like the built-in EVF and the usable autofocus for the occasions when I want it, something that’s not workable with Canon dSLRs.

I also like being able to use classic wide-aperture manual focus lenses such as Olympus Zuikos on the Pannys (with an adapter).

What camera do you recommend for 3D?

  • Profile picture of Patrick McLoad Patrick McLoad said 1 year, 9 months ago ago:

What price range? Do a Google search, if not already… $1400….$21,000…and beyond. Also some cell phones for 500 bucks.
Before long, digital SLR’s will be shooting 3d as well.

If money is no object. I want to shoot a movie like AVATAR or Alice in Wonderland. I don’t need to shoot with a 3D camera necessarily, but I do want my movie to end up as 3D for the big screen.

  • Profile picture of Patrick McLoad Patrick McLoad said 1 year, 9 months ago ago:

Yeah, like I know anything about shooting 3-D for big screen!!
Actually, people don’t buy those types of cameras, they rent them. But you’re way out of the normal 1080p screen size. You’d need to use a RED Epic or similar camera (I’m sure Panavision has something for you as well):

    http://epic.red.com/

And as you probably know, camera work is only half of what went into cutting-edge films like Avatar and Wonderland.

Please invite me to your premiere screening!!

You will want to shoot with a 3D camera if you want to deliver in 3D.

There are ways to fake a 3D effect with 2D footage, but it’s far inferior to true 3D footage.
