Hey. I’m going to be shooting a new short in a couple months and one of the key scenes takes place indoors while a thunderstorm rages outside. I’m wondering if anybody has any suggestions, or methods that they’ve used, to create practical lightning effects on set while shooting. I do not want to rely on post-production, instead I want to have the lightning effect present during the shoot, created practically with lights. I’m just not sure what type of gear would be necessary to create that effect…

You can rent a strobe light that is triggerable with a button.

You can even just use a Lowell Pro/Tota/Omni to do the same thing manually. I did this a while back. You can even use a flash light/shop light to do the same thing. I made a few adjustments to the shop light/flashlight while editing and got realistic “motivated lightening”.
