What does Motion do that you can’t do with After Effects?

I am somewhat disappointed that Motion has taken over for LiveType….now I have to learn that all over again. And what’s with the “mini” timeline? Do I now have to be restricted to 20 second chunks of video?!!

  • Profile picture of Josh Mellicker Josh Mellicker said 1 year, 9 months ago ago:

You can still use LiveType… we have a Motion training DVD that would bring you up to speed in a couple hours, I can get you a major discount! (Maybe $30?)

I’m interested in the training DVD, Josh.

I already have it Josh, though an early version. DVD jacket still looks the same though. I give it another whirl.

I bought a new and expensive Mac Pro about 30 days ago, and it was brought to my attention that the processor I specified is no longer offered, and replace with 12-core monsters. So right out of the box, I had an obsolete machine. Word cannot describe how much this p**** me off. I called Apple, gave holy hell, and they agreed to allow me to return it. I ordered a new one yesterday. I have owned Macs most of my adult life, first one being a Mac/Apple SE-40 decades ago. By comparison, the PC’s have been junk. I think the Sony VAIO was the worst of them all.

So now, my 4 year old Dell mammoth XPS has developed a bad power supply and is virtually useless. Dell wants $1800 for a new “proprietary” 650 watt…. power supply; forget that. Local computer geeks can replace it with a used one for 3-4 hundred bucks…forget that too. So NO MORE PC’s for me! In addition to the new top-of-line Mac Pro, I also ordered a 27″ I-Mac for my desk. I am seriously tired of blowing money on new cameras and computers! I need some paying jobs!! :-)

Wow, that’s great that you could get the 12 core instead. I have heard if you complain enough, yet are reasonable, Apple people are trained to give in.

We just got the 27″ iMac for one of our people, it seems super fast and great for the $$$.

Vic, we will get you hooked up in a few.

Hi, Does anybody else find Motion a lot easier to use than Adobe After Effects?
I am an editor and understand a lot of the programs by just playing about. However, no amount of playing about with AE can help me :)
Although there are some issues with Motion files playing in the FCP timeline. Often causes crashes. The only way to solve this is to export the Motion file as a .mov and place in the FCP timeline.
We realised this the hard way. We were making this video for a client

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4X-uMDeLpOM

and were just placing the Motion file in the timeline. Once 4 or 5 files were in the timeline it just crashed.
Although exporting from Motion does fix this problem is does make the Mac lag somewhat. Even after the export. Anybody know a solution for this? Would really appreciate some help on this. I’m running FCP 6.0.6. Does the upgrade fix this?

Sorry, I don’t have an answer about cause of crashes, but personally, I gave up on AE.

Neat video….but I was unaware that display screens gave off carbon emissions!
