Tascam DR-680 8 Channel Recorder

TASCAM’s DR-680 brings multi-channel portable recording within reach of any musician for polished live, location and surround recordings. Up to eight tracks can be recorded to solid-state SD card media at 96kHz/24-bit Broadcast WAV quality. Six mic inputs provide phantom power and 60dB of gain for great-sounding recordings with your condenser microphones. Record the six microphones along with a digital S/PDIF source for 8 track recording. Each mic input has a selectable low cut filter and analog limiter for optimal sound.

Inputs can be monitored using a built-in mixer with level and pan controls for each input. The stereo mixdown can even be recorded along with the six mics for quick stereo playback of the event. There’s even a built-in speaker to check recordings without headphones.

In addition to WAV recording up to 96kHz, the DR-680 captures stereo audio at 192kHz/24-bit for audiophile-quality masters. The DR-680 records up to four channels of MP3 audio for web-ready recordings. Two of the recorders can be connected with a cascade cable for up to 16-track recording on battery power.

Multi-channel portable recording has never been as simple or affordable as the TASCAM DR-680.

How can I reduce hum or hiss in my audio?

Sometimes a location sound track has hiss (white noise) or a 60 Hz hum that is audible. If the sound is constant, there are some software packages and plugins that can reduce the problem somewhat without affecting the audio quality terribly. Some of them are:

Ray Gun
Sound Soap
Soundtrack Pro
Ionizer

If the background sound you want to remove is not constant, like wind noise, a dog barking, or music playing, then you will need to reshoot the scene or do ADR (automated dialog replacement). (You cannot "cut" a subject’s speech out of the background sounds like you can cut a subject out of their background in Photoshop!)

Great bass response from built-in Bass Enhancer
The MA-15D offers a built-in Bass Enhancer that operates on psychoacoustic principles to convert low frequencies into a series of overtones, which the human ear cannot distinguish from the original low frequencies. This allows a listener to perceive bass frequencies outside of the normal range of the speaker cone, without overdriving the woofer. Connect two sources at the same time
You can also connect two different sources directly into the MA-15Ds, allowing you to listen to audio from any two line-level sources. For example, you could connect both your computer and your stereo to the MA-15Ds, and listen to the audio output of a CD while you play along with a soft synth. The MA-15Ds offer independent volume control for each of these inputs, effectively taking the place of a small desktop mixer for monitoring. You can also plug headphones directly into the MA-15Ds and mix without disturbing other people.
