Tascam DR-680 8 Channel Recorder

TASCAM’s DR-680 brings multi-channel portable recording within reach of any musician for polished live, location and surround recordings. Up to eight tracks can be recorded to solid-state SD card media at 96kHz/24-bit Broadcast WAV quality. Sennheiser ME66/K6 Short Shotgun

Providing twice the SPL output in tests of mics in it’s class, this has been our choice for an excellent quality shotgun. Compare to Audio Technica AT-897 when comparison shopping. This is the mic used in DVcreators.net products.
Keep in mind that this mic has become an industry standard over the last few years. You’ll probably go through a few cameras as technology evolves, but you’ll keep the same shotgun mic throughout the years. The transmitter and receiver are both much smaller than the others on the market and made of solid metal, not cheap plastic, plus these have the backlit LCD read-out display. I especially like the VU meters on both the transmitter and the receiver. The meters even have peak hold!

Unlike other wireless receivers with the “velcro mount solution” the Sennheiser EK100G2 receiver mounts to the camera via the hot-shoe or via the included accessory, you can clip it to anything you wish.

Another awesome feature is called “Pilot squelch“. When enabled, this feature is sending a high-pitched tone at all times from the transmitter (it’s so high in frequency that not even dogs can hear it). If at any time this high-frequency tone is not picked up by the receiver, it automatically Mutes the channel- very cool.

Tip: If you’re thinking of going with a really inexpensive system, it may be better to rent than own. Consult your local rental house. If the shot is worth shooting with a $3,000 camera, the audio is easily worth another $600!

The unit ships with the high-quality ME2 lavalier microphone with both mini plug and XLR output cables. Also see the G2 ENG system below which is identical, but adds the optional plug-on transmitter which can be used to add to a handheld or shotgun mic.

We’ve noticed that these units will run approximately 8 hours on two standard AA batteries in both the transmitter and receiver. Tip: Always use fresh batteries for a new shoot.

A good quality shotgun mic will pickup great sound a few feet directly in front of the mic while at the same time rejecting sound from the sides. This is great for picking out just the sounds you want and is the most desirable and common microphone for DV filmmakers.
A question most new camcorder owners have is, “Which shotgun mic should I buy?” This usually happens after they shot some awesome footage, but later found that they can’t quite make out the intriguing dialogue from what was a light breeze but somehow now whips, rumbles and howls like a tornado.

The most important thing to remember in achieving high quality audio is microphone placement.
Get the mic as close as you can to the subject without getting the mic in the frame. It’s also important to “cue” or point the mic at the subject if you can and always monitor your audio through a pair of closed-eared headphones.
So if you’ve been getting bad audio, the solution is a high-quality shotgun mic, good wind protection if outdoors, and concentrate on getting that mic in as close as you can. With these few tips, your audio should improve remarkably. Remember, as George Lucas says, “Audio is 50% of your project.”

How does it sound?
Like it’s not even there. The RAINMAN is more acoustically transparent than traditional “furry” windshield covers

The RAINMAN is made of a soft, lightweight batting that does not absorb water or mat up when wet. Instead, the rain drops simply slow down as they flow through and are channeled out the front. The exterior is net material with sturdy stitching and a Velcro closure. The RAINMAN easily slides onto most windscreens, and is secured with Velcro.

The RAINMAN goes on and off quickly and easily. To install the RAINMAN, simply slide it on with the open end at the front of the microphone then close the Velcro slot.

In heavier rain, the RAINMAN may eventually take on water faster than it can channel it through. In this case, it may be a good idea to occasionally remove the RAINMAN and shake or wring the water out. With a little experience you will get a feel for when and how often this should be done. The RAINMAN’s effectiveness has been proven in actual production environments.

It is recommended that the RAINMAN be used without a furry wind cover. However, for added wind protection, a stretchy “sock” type cover may be used under the RAINMAN.
