9. Career: Film & Video Editor

Median Salary: $63,680

With YouTube now hosting more searches per day than any site save Google (GOOG), the need for film and video editors is clear. The California Labor Dept. expects the field to grow in 2011, as agencies, media firms, corporations, and institutions look to spread their messages via video—so don’t limit your search to one sector. This field requires specialized training, of course. It makes a great choice for creative types who want to  [read more →]

The IPad 1 & 2 For Digital Visualmakers

by Paul Antico - via The iPad 1 & 2 for Digital Visualmakers – Blog – NeedCreative.

I’ll admit it up front: I love Apple products. I find the elegance in their use and design, the software and hardware integration, their near ubiquitousness in the Creative community, and the just plain “cool” factor of owning Apple products very satisfying. However, in the end what makes me most attracted to Apple products is that for the most  [read more →]

Why ‘Big Media’ Was Just a Historical Blip | Techi.com

Mar 22, 2011 at 2:08 pm in delivery, digital video news by Josh Mellicker · Leave a Comment »

The conversation about the shift from “old” to “new” media usually goes something like this: 1) the media business has fundamentally changed; 2) media companies need to think in new ways due to the problems of fragmentation, the attention economy and a whole range of platforms; 3) those that adapt to the new will win; those that won’t, will fold – and they deserve it too.

So the advice from new media gurus is always the same: existing media companies –  [read more →]

SketchUp 8 is out, great tool for previs

at 10:13 am in cinematography, planning, production by Josh Mellicker · Leave a Comment »

Filmmakers have long been using Google SketchUp Pro to map out complicated scenes, camera moves, and set designs — according to Google, the $495 program has been used for planning shots for projects including Inception, 300, The Social Network, and Tron: Legacy. Offering robust 3D visualization without the complexity of real 3D toolsets, SketchUp has proved itself so useful as a previs tool that it’s hard to believe that the core functionality for filmmakers, a “Film & Stage” plug-in that dates  [read more →]

How do I export a high quality movie from Final Cut Pro 7 or Express?

Once you’re finished with your edit, how should you export?

Well, it depends. Here are three methods:

METHOD #1. Reference movie

If you want to export a temporary movie as quickly as possible, export a reference movie.

1. File > Export > Quicktime Movie

2. UNcheck “Make Self-Contained”

Pros:

  • Fastest export
  • The file size is small – it only contains audio and pointers to  [read more →]

How do I install QuickTime Player 7 on OSX Snow Leopard?

Snow Leopard ships with a cut-down version of QuickTime. As video editors, we’re used to being able to export multiple formats from QuickTime, but the standard QuickTime Player no longer has the ‘Export’ menu option.

The workaround for this is to install QuickTime Player 7 from the OSX install disk. Heres a MicroTip video which explains how to do it.

In Review: Rode NTG-2 Shotgun Mic

By Carl Mrozek

While HD-capable DSLRs offer phenomenal video quality in a compact package at an affordable price, audio recording is somewhat of a challenge and remains the weak link in the production loop. A key factor is that DSLR onboard mics are so small that they make lavs look big, and the only audio input is mini-pin, which is mono with no headphone jack or other audio monitoring option.

Using a pro mic of any kind, especially a shotgun, with DSLRs  [read more →]

Newspapers overtake broadcasters in video streaming

Newspaper sites have overtaken broadcaster sites in the number of videos uploaded, according to a report by Brightcove and TubeMogul.

Its quarterly report, which analysed a sample of US-based and global Brightcove customers for Q3 2010, found that newspaper sites streamed 313m minutes of video in the quarter, compared with 290m minutes uploaded by broadcasters.

Newspapers saw 51% growth in video content, surpassing broadcasters for total minutes streamed for the first time, suggesting that newspapers are quickly adapting their once print-dominated businesses  [read more →]

The future of TV

Jan 24, 2011 at 4:19 pm in broadcast, delivery, web video by Josh Mellicker · Leave a Comment »

Today, your average TV might have connected to it a cable or satellite box, a DVD and/or Blu Ray player, a gaming device like an xBox, PlayStation or Wii, a DVR, and maybe even a Roku, Apple TV or Boxee box, all ensconced in an HDMI cable spaghetti mess with a bevy of remotes to match.

This is completely crazy.

Shaping the Future: 7 Predictions for the Creative Community

Thoughts on the Road Ahead for Creative Professionals

In recent years, I believe that technology has been a little reckless with creative professionals. In many ways, technology has (shockingly) been obstructing productive creative careers. Crowdsourcing spec contests, the lack of proper attribution for most creative talent displayed online, and inefficient services for career management – just  to name a few.

But my team and I at Behance see the tide turning. We believe that technology and the latest shifts in creative industries  [read more →]

Park, director of the internationally known “Old Boy,””Lady Vengeance” and “Thirst,” said Monday that his new fantasy-horror film “Paranmanjang” was shot entirely on Apple Inc.’s iconic smartphone.

“The new technology creates strange effects because it is new and because it is a medium the audience is used to,” Park told reporters Monday.

10 Tips for Better Video with Your Canon HDSLR Camera – The Photoletariat

There are many ways to manipulate DSLR cameras for video work. Here are a few tips I have picked up along the way that I would recommend to anyone shooting video with a HDSLR.

1. For all Professional Canon HDSLR’s, we have discovered what we call “Native” ISO’s. They are 160, 320, 640, 1250 and 2500. We have found that the other ISO’s are either a pull down or push up from the native ISO’s. This will improve the quality of  [read more →]

Browsing the web reading various reports and reviews about Premiere Pro I keep coming across the statement that because Premiere Pro works without the need to transcode H.264 DSLR files the footage inherently retains more quality.

After using Premiere Pro for a week or so I decided to spend some time investigating this theory and came up with some interesting results that I thought I’d share with you. Firstly let me describe the workflow involved in each  [read more →]

The NTG-3 competes head to head with the Sennheiser MKH-416 shotgun. While the 416 has been an industry standard for years, the $1199 price has kept many aspiring filmmakers at bay. With it’s aggressively focused pickup pattern and buttery smooth sound, the NTG-3 is poised to become the go to microphone for high definition shooters. Canon 5D Mark II

We managed to get our hands on the hot new Canon 5D Mark II camera and put it through the paces. This is an extraordinary hybrid DSLR. The 1920×1080 HD movies produced by this camera are jaw dropping. While the lack of manual controls in movie mode and the poor audio quality leave a lot to be desired, the visual clarity and film-like depth of field are sheer awe inspiring.
